Take Your Drapes Higher - and All the Way to the Floor

If your room feels a little “off” and you can’t quite figure out why, take a look at your curtains. Chances are, they’re hanging too low… or stopping too short.

This is one of those small design tweaks that makes a huge difference and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Why Higher Is Better

When you hang your drapery right above the window frame, you’re basically telling the eye, “This is where the wall stops.” But when you move the rod higher closer to the ceiling the eye travels upward, and suddenly the whole room feels taller and more open.

A good rule of thumb? Hang the rod 6–12 inches above the window, or even just below the ceiling or crown molding if you want that designer look.

No renovations required. Just a drill and a little

courage.

Yes, They Should Touch the Floor

Curtains that stop halfway down the wall (or awkwardly hover above the floor) can make a room feel unfinished. Floor-length drapes instantly make a space feel more intentional and pulled together.

You’ve got options here:

  • Just touching the floor for a clean, tailored look

  • A soft break for a relaxed feel

  • A slight puddle if you love a little drama (especially in bedrooms or formal spaces)

What we’re avoiding: curtains that look like they were measured in a hurry.

Want Bigger-Looking Windows? Here’s the Trick

Extend the curtain rod a few inches past the window frame on each side. This lets the panels sit mostly on the wall when open, which makes the window look wider and lets in more natural light.

It’s one of those “designer secrets” that’s actually very simple—and very effective.

The Overall Effect

Hanging drapes higher and to the floor adds height, softness, and structure all at once. It makes the room feel calmer, more balanced, and way more finished.

And honestly? It’s one of the fastest ways to make your home look like it was professionally styled even if it wasn’t.

The Bottom Line

If you only change three things:

  • Hang your drapes higher

  • Make sure they reach the floor

  • Extend the rod wider than the window

You’ll be amazed at how different your space feels. Sometimes the fix really is that easy.
